Man to die for killing wife, rapist gets life
A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Rampal upazila of the district in 2014.
The death penalty awardee is Mohammad Habi Sarder, 35 son of Jahir Sarder of Gona Belai village in the upazila.
According to the prosecution, Habi married Hasina Begum, daughter of Torab Ali of Burirdanga village in Mogla upazila of the district, in 2000.
Habi picked up a quarrel with Hasina over a trivial matter at around 8:30am on October 21, 2014. At one stage, he hacked Hasina, strangled her and fled the house. Police arrested Habi from Khulna the same day.
Victim's brother Shamsul Molla filed a murder case with Rampal Police Station on the day, accusing Habi. Later, Habi gave confessional statement before a court.
Sub-Inspector Thakur Das pressed charges against Habi on December 31, 2004. After examining the case record and evidence, District and Sessions Judge Md Mizanur Rahman pronounced the verdict.
In Netrakona, a tribunal yesterday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl at Durgasram village in Sadar upazila in 2009, reports UNB.
The lifer is Rubel Miah, 32, son of Abdul Miah of the village. Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal also fined the convict Tk 20,000. In default, he is to suffer one year more in jail.
According to the prosecution, Rubel raped the girl, a resident of the same village, as she came out of their house, responding to the call of nature on March 25, 2009.
Victim's father filed a case with Sadar Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act the following day.
Police later submitted charge sheet against Rubel to the court. After examining the case record and witnesses, Judge Dr AKM Abul Kashem of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, Netrakona handed down the verdict.
