Man killed in clash, woman burnt in acid attack

An elderly man was killed during a clash and a housewife was burnt in an acid attack over land disputes in Nagarpur and Basail upazilas of the district on Sunday evening and early yesterday.

In Nagarpur upazila, two groups of people clashed over a land dispute at Babna village on Sunday evening, leaving one Noor Hossain Bepari, 72, dead and four others injured.

Police said there had been a longstanding dispute between Noor Hossain and his nephew Dulal Bepari over a piece of land.

Nur Hossian and Dulal locked in an altercation over the issue around 6:00pm. At one stage, the supporters of the duo attacked each other with bamboo sticks and sharp weapons. The clash left at least five people, including Noor Hossain, injured.

The inured were admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital where Hossain succumbed to his injuries at around 7:40pm.

In Basil upazila, a housewife sustained burn injuries as her neighbour hurled acid at her at Nahali village early yesterday.

The victim, Afrina Jahan, 30, wife of Dipu Sikder, was admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital.

Contacted, Delwar Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Basail Police Station, said Dipu's family has a dispute with neighbour Khorshed Alam over a piece of land and Dipu had earlier filed a case against him in this regard.

As a sequel to the dispute, Khorshed threw acid on Arifa when she was going to the toilet around 5:30am, police said quoting the victim.

Hearing screams, family members rescued Arifa and took her to the hospital, locals said.
