Man kills wife over dowry

A man allegedly strangled his wife to death over dowry in Semorkuna village of Rajnagor upazila under the district.

The victim Sultana, 26, got married with Meher Miah, 32, of the village three years ago, said the victim's brother Ali Hosain.

Despite being given properties worth Tk 1 lakh and 2 kathas of land as dowry during marriage, Meher Miah tortured Sultana and even sent her back to her father's home for more, Ali Hosain said.

At around 11:30pm on Monday, Meher demanded money from his wife and they locked in a quarrel as she refused to give it.

Meher strangled Sultana when she was asleep. Locals rushed her to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital, where she died around 11:00am yesterday.

Nazma Begum, assistant sub-inspector of Rajnagor Police Station, said the victim's brother filed a case in this regard against Meher Ali. "We are waiting for the autopsy report," she said.

Meher Ali went into hiding after the incident.
