Star Online Report

Mango harvest in Rajshahi will begin from May 15, local administration has decided.

The decision was drawn today by district administration despite concerns of growers that the mangoes will not ripen until May-end, our local staff correspondent reports.

Today’s meeting, held at the office of deputy commissioner’s conference room, decided that the first phase of harvesting will be of Guti mango from May 15.

Gopalbhog will be harvested on May 20, Ranipasand and Laxmanbhog on May 25, Khirsapat or Himsagar on May 28, Langra on June 6, Amrapali, Fazli and Surma Fazli on June 16, and Ashwina varieties on July 1, the meeting decided.

The date for harvesting three varieties of Guti, Gopalbhog, and Laukhna or Laksmanbhog have been fixed at least five days ahead of schedule compared to last year, Rajshahi’s Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader said.

“If the present spell of heat wave continues, the mangoes will ripe quickly,” Shawkat Ali, a mango producer and Bhaya Laxmikul union chairman, said at the meeting. “And in case of rainfall, the ripening will delay,” he added.

Officials of Department of Agricultural Extension, Rajshahi Fruit Research Centre and a few mango producers, however, opined for fixing the date.

Khairul Islam, a mango orchard owner of Godagari upazila, who was present at the meeting, said, his mangoes would not be ready for harvest before the end of May.

When contacted, Anisur Rahman, a mango grower of Bagha told our staff correspondent, “None of my Gopalbhog and Khirsapat mangoes will ripe before 20 days”.
