Robbers loot 7 jewellery shops in Munshiganj
Armed robbers looted gold and silver jewellery from seven shops at Dighirpar Bazar in Tongibari upazila of the district early yesterday.
The gang also beat up the employees of the shops, including one Shyamol Paul, 18, mercilessly as they refused to hand over the keys of the lockers.
Police quoted witnesses as saying that a gang of 40/45 came to the bazar on the bank of the Padma River by trawlers around 1:45am.
The gang members, divided into several groups, tied up all the ten night guards at gunpoint and entered the shops owned by Liton Ghosh, Shangkar Sarker, Bishnu Paul, Firup Chittania, Milon Das, Laxman Das and Sudhir Majhi by breaking open the doors.
They looted gold and silver ornaments and money in cash from the shops and the left the scene around 2:30am, said officer-in-charge Alamgir Hossain of Tongibari Police Station.
Sudhir Majhi, one of the shop owners, said the gang entered his shop by breaking open the door while he was asleep. They snatched the keys of the iron safe at gunpoint and took away gold ornaments worth Tk 3 lakh from the shop, he added.
None of the gang members was arrested as of filing of this report at 6:00pm yesterday.
