Sramik League leader hacked to death, one arrested
A Sramik League leader was hacked to death by his rivals at Mahendranagar village under Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila on Saturday night.
The deceased, Fakhrul Islam Bullet, 35, was president of Mahendranagar union unit of Sramik League.
Witnesses said an unidentified gang swooped on Bullet in Mahendranagar Khan Market area around 8:300pm, hit him with sharp weapons and left the scene, leaving him critically injured.
Locals took Bullet to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Police arrested one Apel Islam, 29, of Kazir Cahwra village in the upazila the same night, suspecting his involvement in the killing.
Lotus Sarker, a cousin of the slain Sramik League leader, said there had been a rivalry between Fakhrul and local AL leader Aminul Islam Khan over establishing supremacy in the area for the last six months.
Bullet had received death threats from Aminul Islam Khan several times, Lotus claimed, adding that Aminul and his cohorts killed him.
Refuting the allegation, Aminul said neither he nor his men were involved in the killing of Fakhrul.
