Woman shot as 2 rival groups clash
Four people were injured, one by bullet, during a clash between two rival groups in in Birampur upazila of the district yesterday.
The injured are Moinul Islam, 27, a newly elected UP member of Katla union in the upazila, Jannatul Ferdous Munni, 18, wife of Md Ripon of Dakkhin Daudpur village, Bulan Uddin, 35, son of Nasir Uddin Kabiraz, and Joytsna Begum, 35, wife of Samir Uddin of the area.
Of them, Munni was admitted to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital with serious bullet injuries on the head.
Locals said there was a dispute between elected UP member Moinul and defeated candidate Afiz Uddin since the election was held early March this year.
Over the issue, an armed gang allegedly led by Afiz Uddin swooped on Moinul at his betel leaf orchard around 11:00am yesterday.
As the family members and his supporters tried to save him, the gang attacked them, leaving three people injured. The attackers also fired several gunshots, leaving Munni injured.
The situation is now under control, said Amiruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Birampur Police Station.
Away in Thakurgaon, Police arrested Golam Mostafa, a defeated chairman candidate for Ruhea Union Parishad in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila yesterday in a case for obstructing election officials and law enforcers from discharging their duties at a polling centre during the May 7 union parishad election, reports our correspondent.
