‘Bonolota Express’ begins breaking records in Canada and US
“Bonolota Express”, directed by Tanim Noor, has recorded the second-highest opening of all time for a Bangladeshi film in North America.
The Eid release has also reached number 17 on the US Top Chart. The film is based on the novel “Kichukkhon” by the late legendary writer Humayun Ahmed.
Director Tanim Noor expressed his excitement over the film’s success in Canada and the United States. “I am amazed by the response from North American audiences. I thank all the artistes and crew of the film. I remember Humayun Ahmed sir—he is the real magician. I also thank international distributor Swapna Scarecrow for bringing the film to audiences,” he said.
Mohammad Waliullah Sajib, president of the film’s international distributor Swapna Scarecrow, shared the news on social media, calling the achievement “extraordinary.” He added, “As the first Bangladeshi film, it has secured a place in the top 20 of the domestic (USA + Canada) box office chart. In its first three days, it grossed an astonishing $154,000. Previously, ‘Hawa’ earned $159,000 in the same period. No other Bangladeshi film has even managed $65,000 in its first three days in North America.”
With just three days of earnings, “Bonolota Express” has become the fourth highest-grossing Bangladeshi film of all time in the US and Canada, surpassing the lifetime collections of “Toofan” ($150,000), “Priyotoma” ($132,000), and “Debi” ($125,000). The film has also outperformed “Utshob”, and industry insiders expect it could approach “Hawa”’s lifetime gross of $358,000.
Released on April 3 across 52 theatres in Canada, the US, and the UK, “Bonolota Express” is presented by Bangladeshi cinema’s pioneering international distributor Swapna Scarecrow. During its first week, the film is showing in 10 theatres in Canada, 38 in the US, and 4 in the UK.
The film stars Mosharraf Karim, Chanchal Chowdhury, Sariful Razz, Azmeri Haque Badhan, Sabila Nur, Shamol Mowla, Zakia Bari Mamo, Intekhab Dinar, and a host of other stars. Produced by Buriganga Talkies with co-production by Hoichoi Production, the film is presented by UCB and internationally distributed by Swapna Scarecrow.
