‘Eta Amaderi Golpo’: What’s driving its widespread popularity?
A particular television drama series has become the talk of the town, across social media, in tea-stall conversations, and beyond. Something that had long faded has returned: people are once again talking about dramas. The serial “Eta Amaderi Golpo” has revived that old culture of collective viewing and discussion.
Viewers now eagerly wait for each new episode. Within just a few hours of release, every episode surpasses a million views. Audiences at home and abroad are following each twist and turn with keen interest.
The series is directed by Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Raz, who previously created the widely discussed serial “Family Crisis" a few years ago.
So why are audiences so drawn to “Eta Amaderi Golpo”?
One key reason is its focus on family—a theme that has been relatively scarce on local television and YouTube in recent times. Many viewers say it is a series they can watch together with their families. At the same time, they see reflections of their own lives in its story and characters.
Inspired by the Pakistani series “Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum”, the drama has been adapted to reflect Bangladeshi family culture. Its fresh storytelling, emotional depth, distinctive direction, and lively performances have all contributed to its popularity. The portrayal of familial bonds and emotional complexities has particularly resonated with viewers.
Interestingly, several actors from the series are now widely recognised by their character names rather than their real ones. The story revolves around four central characters—Fahad, Samir, Mehreen, and Saira—and their families.
Irfan Sajjad plays Fahad, while Khairul Basar appears as Samir; the two portray brothers. In a dramatic twist, Samir marries Mehreen, who was once Fahad’s lover. Mehreen is played by Keya Payel, and Sunerah Binte Kamal plays Fahad’s wife, Saira. Their performances have made such an impact that audiences often refer to them by their on-screen identities. Veteran actress Deepa Khandakar has earned the affectionate title of the nation’s “favourite aunt” through her role.
Reflecting on the success, the director said, “‘Eta Amaderi Golpo’ is a dream project for me. I am glad I was able to bring it to life as I had envisioned. The love we’ve received from viewers means a great deal, and I’m grateful to them.”
He added, “This is my biggest reward. When I see audiences connecting so deeply with the story—laughing and crying along with it—it makes all the effort worthwhile. I simply tried to tell an honest story. We didn’t exaggerate; we stayed close to real life. Perhaps it is this familiarity—people seeing their own stories and families—that has drawn them in.”
The journey of winning hearts will come to an end with its 52nd episode. The final episode will premiere on May 8 at 3 pm on the Cinemawala YouTube channel, with a special extended runtime of 92 minutes as a gift for viewers.
