Monchosharothi Ataur Rahman no more
Renowned theatre personality, actor, playwright, and stage director Ataur Rahman is no more. He breathed his last at around 12am on Monday night while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital. He was 84.
Actor Rawnak Hasan confirmed the news of his death to The Daily Star.
He said, “Independence Award-winning cultural personality Monchosharothi Ataur Rahman has departed for the eternal abode. We pray for the peace of his soul.”
Earlier, Ataur Rahman had been on life support in critical condition. According to family sources, his health deteriorated after he fell at home last Friday. He was first taken to a hospital in Gulshan and later transferred to another hospital in Dhanmondi for intensive care. As his condition worsened, he was placed on life support. Doctors said that multiple organs in his body had failed.
Ataur Rahman was born on 18 June 1941 in Noakhali. He played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s post-independence theatre movement and remained an influential figure in the cultural arena for decades. He was widely respected as a playwright, actor, stage director, and author.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the country’s arts and culture, he was honoured with both the Ekushey Padak and the Independence Award.
His death has cast a shadow of grief over the country’s cultural community. Theatre activists, artistes, and admirers have expressed deep sorrow and prayed for the eternal peace of his soul.
