‘There can be no explanation for this genocide’: Javier Bardem addresses blacklist rumours at Cannes
At a press conference for his latest project, “My Beloved”, Academy Award-winning actor Javier Bardem addressed longstanding rumours surrounding his professional standing in the industry following his outspoken comments on the conflict in Gaza.
Amid reports of an alleged “blacklist” affecting high-profile figures who speak out on geopolitical issues, Bardem spoke openly about fear, accountability, and the consequences of public advocacy.
Responding to a question about whether speaking out had placed his career at risk, Bardem acknowledged that fear does exist, but stressed the importance of acting despite it.
He told reporters that one must continue to do what feels necessary, even in moments of fear, in order to remain honest with oneself. He added that such actions inevitably carry consequences, but said he was fully prepared to face them.
While noting that much of his career continues to come from North America, Europe, and Spain, Bardem also addressed speculation surrounding industry exclusion. Reaffirming his stance on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, he stated, “There can be no explanation for this genocide.”
The actor further suggested that the “so-called blacklist” would eventually be exposed, adding that those responsible for enforcing such restrictions may ultimately face scrutiny themselves.
Bardem’s appearance at the Cannes Film Festival has remained one of the festival’s most closely watched moments. By addressing political tensions directly during the press conference for “My Beloved”, the actor shifted attention beyond cinema toward the ethical responsibilities of public figures and artistes.
Concluding the session, Bardem reiterated that he was prepared to accept any professional consequences resulting from his position, emphasising that his moral convictions remained more important than industry security.
