Case filed against TV actor Zaher Alvi over wife’s death
Actor Zaher Alvi has been named the principal accused in a case filed over the death of his wife, Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra, who police say died by suicide at their residence in Mirpur DOHS in the capital.
Officials at Pallabi Police Station said the incident occurred on Saturday (February 28) afternoon at the couple’s apartment in Mirpur DOHS. Police confirmed that the actor, Alvi was in Nepal for a shooting assignment when the incident took place.
Ikra’s father filed a case alleging abetment to suicide, naming the actor as the main accused, according to investigators. Police said an inquiry has begun, and further action will depend on evidence gathered during the investigation.
In a Facebook post, Alvi confirmed his wife’s death, saying she died by suicide at their Mirpur DOHS residence on Saturday afternoon while he was in Nepal for a shooting assignment. “I am not in a condition to speak after hearing the news,” he wrote, adding that he could not understand why she had taken such a step without thinking about their child or family.
Requesting time to return to Dhaka, he urged journalists and well-wishers, “Please give me some time,” and appealed to the public not to spread misleading information, asking for privacy and empathy for his family during the difficult period. He also requested prayers for his late wife.
According to available information, the couple married on November 9, 2010, though the marriage became publicly known only in 2024. They have a child, Priyomaya.
Police officials said no further details could be disclosed at this stage, adding that findings from the ongoing investigation would determine the next legal steps.
Editorial note: Allegations in the case remain under investigation. No charges have been proven in court.
