‘Michael’ becomes first biopic to cross US$1 billion globally
The Michael Jackson biopic "Michael" has become the first biographical film in history to surpass the $1 billion mark at the global box office, setting a new benchmark for the genre.
The film has earned $629.8 million internationally and $371.8 million in North America, bringing its worldwide total to $1.001 billion, according to studio figures.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, "Michael" has consistently broken box office records since its theatrical release in April. The film debuted with $97 million in North America and $217 million worldwide, setting a new opening weekend record for a musical biopic, surpassing the previous benchmark held by "Straight Outta Compton".
The film has also overtaken "Bohemian Rhapsody", which grossed $911 million globally, to become the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time. It has additionally surpassed "Oppenheimer" to become the highest-grossing film based on a real-life figure.
The milestone marks a historic achievement for Lionsgate, making "Michael" the studio's highest-grossing release and its first film to cross the $1 billion threshold. Prior to "Michael", the studio's biggest global hits were "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2".
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson credited audiences for the film's success, describing it as a cultural phenomenon embraced by moviegoers around the world.
"Their passion reflects the enduring legacy of one of the greatest recording artists of all time and demonstrates the continued strength of the theatrical experience," he said.
Based on the life of the late King of Pop, "Michael" traces Jackson's journey from his early years with the Jackson 5 to becoming one of the world's most influential entertainers. Jaafar Jackson, the singer's real-life nephew, makes his acting debut in the title role, while Colman Domingo and Nia Long portray Michael's parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson.
Director Antoine Fuqua said reaching the billion-dollar milestone was a humbling achievement that reflected the dedication of the entire cast and crew.
"This historic milestone belongs to everyone who came together to honour one of the greatest artists the world has ever known. I'm deeply grateful to audiences across the globe for embracing the film and its story," he said.
"Michael" is only the second film released in 2026 to surpass the $1 billion mark worldwide, following "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie", while "Toy Story 5" is expected to join the list soon.
