20,000 marooned in Nilphamari as Teesta River inundates low lying areas

At least 20,000 people living in different shoals of Teesta River and surrounding low lying areas in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas of Nilphamari were marooned as water level in the river started to increase from this morning.

Mohammad Rashedin, sub-division engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) in Dalia office, said as per WDB measurement, the river water was flowing 35 centimeter above the danger mark, the highest this year.

Many flood victims have taken shelter at the embankment of Teesta and other structures of WDB with their belongings and cattle, reports our Nilphamari correspondent.

Executive engineer of WDB's Dalia division Asfauddoula said they had kept all 44 gates of Teesta barrage open to release water and are also keeping a close eye on the situation.

Dimla UNO Joyashree Rani Roy said that they provided relief to the victims instantly and are preparing to provide more support as the concerned union parishad is making a list of victims.
