Brahmaputra flowing above danger level, flooding worsens in Kurigram

The water level of Brahmaputra River was flowing 50 cm above danger level at Chilmari point of Kurigram this morning which has further deteriorated the overall flooding in Kurigram.

For the past one week, more than 50,000 flood-affected people in more than 200 chars and riverine villages of Kurigram have been living in terrible conditions due shortage of food and drinking water, reports our local correspondent.

More than 15,000 hectares of Aman paddy fields and vegetable fields have been submerged in flood waters. The flood affected people have taken shelter on roads, Water Development Board embankment and railway lines.

Ariful Islam, executive engineer of the Kurigram WDB, said the water level of Brahmaputra River could rise further and it is rising due to the water from upstream in India. "Till now, no flood control embankment has been affected anywhere," he said.

Jaheda Bewa (60) of at Ramna area of ​​Chilmari upazila, told The Daily Star that water was not receding from her house and she has been waterlogged for a week. So far, no government assistance has been provided to them, the correspondent quoted her as saying.

Kurigram District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Haidar Ali Sarker told The Daily Star that 280 metric tons of rice and Tk 10 lakh in cash was being distributed among the flood affected victims.

Meanwhile, Teesta River was flowing 35 cm above the danger level at the Teesta Barrage Point at Doani area of Hatibandha upazila in Lalmonirhat, said Mizanur Rahman, executive engineer of the Lalmonirhat WDB.
