Brahmaputra water crosses danger level in Kurigram
The water level in the Brahmaputra river crossed the danger level due to rain and water from the upstream.
The water level of Brahmaputra at Chilmari point in Kurigram was flowing 3 cm above its danger level at 6am this morning.
The water level of Dharla River was flowing 14cm above the danger mark at the Dharla Bridge point in Kurigram Sadar upazila while it was flowing above 9cm above the danger level at Shimulbari point in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent quoting Kurigram and Lalmonirhat Water Development Board officials.
Around 450 chars and low-lying areas of Kurigram are submerged. As the water level continues to rise, people of the district have started taking shelter at safer places with their belongings.
More than 2,000 people have been stranded in 10 villages of three unions of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila due to the inundation of the Dharla River. Many have taken shelter on the roads.
"Water from the Brahmaputra entered my house this morning. We are preparing to go to a shelter with our furniture and cattle," Nabir Hossain (56), a farmer from Char Parbati area of Jatrapur union in Kurigram Sadar upazila, told The Daily Star.
Mansur Ali (45), of Sardob village in Kurigram Sadar, said he has been living on a road with his family for the last two days as there is three-four feet of water in his house.
"The flood situation could worsen in the coming days as the water level in the Brahmaputra could rise further in the next 24 hours," Ariful Islam, executive engineer of the Kurigram Water Development Board, told this correspondent.
