Probe body visits four haors
A probe body formed by the Ministry of Water Resources yesterday visited four haors in Sunamganj where farmers suffered crop losses due to early flash flood.
Following allegations of corruption, negligence and anomalies, the ministry on Monday formed the six-member probe body led by its Additional Secretary Syeda Salma Jafrin to look into possible anomalies in building and maintaining levees.
Other members of the body are Sylhet's Additional Divisional Commissioner Debojit Sinha, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) Additional Director General Mahbubur Rahman, chief engineer Enayet Ullah, Sunamganj's Additional District Magistrate Anwar Ul Hakim and the ministry's Deputy Secretary Mobasherul Islam.
The probe body visited Chandra Shomar Tal Haor, Gurmar Haor, Gurmar Haor (extended) and Matian Haor, said Jahurul Islam, executive engineer of the BWDB in Sunamganj.
He said the probe body will be visiting haors in Derai and Shalla upazilas today.
After heavy torrential rainfall in India's Meghalaya, a flash flood hits country's north eastern haor region on April 1.
More than 7,000 hectares of Boro harvest were submerged, 4,900 hectares in Sunamganj alone.
