Two units at Ashuganj Power Station shut down after grid fault

Technical glitch in Ashuganj-Bhulta transmission line cuts around 570MW from national grid supply

Two units at Ashuganj Power Station in Brahmanbaria shut down today (March 13, 2026) due to a technical fault in the national grid line, reducing power supply to the grid by about 570 MW.

The affected units are the East Unit (400 MW capacity) and the North Unit (450 MW capacity).

Engineer Sayeed Ekramullah, managing director of Ashuganj Power Station Company Limited (APSCL), said the Ashuganj-Bhulta national grid transmission line developed a sudden glitch around 2:15pm, forcing the line to shut down.

As a result, around 250 MW electricity produced from the East Unit and 320 MW from the North Unit were cut off from the national grid. This has led to a total reduction of approximately 570 MW in power supply, he said.

Engineers at the plant started working immediately to restore operations after the shutdown, he said.

Mohammad Abdul Majid, executive director (operation and maintenance) of the plant, said the North Unit is expected to resume operation shortly once the necessary signal is received, while restarting the East Unit may take some additional time.

According to the Ashuganj Power Station Company Limited, the power station currently has a total generation capacity of around 1,580-1,600MW. However, due to insufficient gas supply, the plant usually generates about 1,200-1,300MW of electricity.
