Beware of fake news

For the past four months, the global coronavirus pandemic has affected institutions, challenged conventions and presented an ever growing array of problems that need decisive solutions.

In these trying times, The Daily Star's credibility, authenticity and authority as a source of legitimate, verified news are being challenged by rumours and impersonators publishing fake news.

Recently, a page on Facebook titled "Bangladesh Sangbadik Samity" ran rumours about one of our reporters being "Covid-19 positive" and "escaping quarantine".

We urge our readers as well as our esteemed colleagues in the news industry to be watchful of such rumours and keep their trust in us.

At the same time, we ask our readers to be cautious of any web portal that carries a likeness to The Daily Star -- in name, structure or presentation -- as we do not have any other online presence aside from our official website, www.thedailystar.net, or our verified social media channels.
