Help find the killers

Father of Avijit urges all to come up with clues
Staff Correspondent

Prof Ajoy Roy, father of slain writer-blogger Avijit Roy, has requested all to help bring his son's killers to book by providing photos or video clips people might have taken during or immediately after the gruesome attack.

The bereaved father, himself a secular writer, made the appeal to all with police revealing no major breakthrough in the murder investigation although more than two weeks have elapsed since Avijit was killed.

"Chances are someone has taken photos or videotaped Avijit's murder or part of it as almost everyone has smart phones these days," Ajoy told the Daily Star.

Should anyone have any such document, Prof Ajoy requested people to contact the case's investigation officer or email him at roya_k2003@yahoo.com.

A team of FBI already visited Dhaka and examined the murder scene to help police run the investigation. Detective Branch of police also handed over some murder evidence to the team for a DNA test.

Avijit was hacked on a sidewalk near Dhaka University's TSC around 8:45pm on February 26. His wife, Rafida Ahmed Bonya, was also injured in the attack and is now recovering from a number of wounds to her head and hands in the USA where she was taken days after the attack for safety reasons.

Joint Commissioner of Detective Branch Monirul Islam told journalists yesterday that another technical expert from the FBI was expected in the country any day.

Police have arrested Shafiur Rahman Farabi in connection with the murder for issuing several death threats to Avijit on his Facebook page over the last two years.

Prof Ajoy is also considering placing a complaint to the Inspector General of Police against the policemen responsible for maintaining law and order at the crime scene on Feb 26.
