10,000 Indian security personnel deployed in Kashmir

India has deployed about 10,000 security forces personnel to the Kashmir valley in order to step up counter-insurgency operations and maintain law and order situation there, officials said today.

They said the federal Home Ministry has ordered the deployment of 100 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) on July 25 on an "immediate basis" and 100 more companies are expected to be sent to the valley later, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

Each CAPFs company comprises of 100 personnel.

The ministry has said these security personnel will be deployed to strengthen the counter-insurgency grid and law and order duties in the Kashmir Valley.

The officials also said the new units will reinforce the strength of security forces already present in the valley and carrying out counter-terrorism operations daily.

The troops will be in addition to about 65 regular battalions of the paramilitary personnel in the valley and over 20 other battalions of other forces deployed ahead of a Hindu pilgrimage in the region that will end on August 15.

The latest addition of the troops will also help in the holding of the assembly polls in the state that are expected to be held in some time, the officials added.
