Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury appointed NHRC chairman
The government has appointed former High Court judge Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury as the new chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), alongside four newly appointed commissioners.
Moyeenul previously served as chairman of the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances.
A notification issued today by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs confirmed the appointments, stating that they were made by the President under Sub-section (1) of Section 6 of the National Human Rights Commission Ordinance, 2025, based on the recommendation of the selection committee.
The newly appointed commissioners are Md Nur Khan, former member of the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances; Md Shariful Islam, professor of Political Science at Dhaka University; Nabila Idris, former member of the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances; and Ilira Dewan, a human rights activist.
The notification, signed by Joint Secretary (Drafting) Mohammad Asaduzzaman Nur, said that the appointments take effect immediately.
