Union-level Awami League leader shot in Kushtia

Police recover two motorcycles, bullets, magazine from the scene; yet to identify assailants

Md Shafiqul Islam Azam, general secretary of the Amla union unit of the Awami League in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia, was seriously injured after being shot by unidentified assailants Sunday evening.

The attack occurred around 6:30pm while Azam was sitting inside a tobacco warehouse at Sadarapur Bazar.

Police said the shooters have not yet been identified, and locals were unable to provide details.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Mirpur Circle) Muhammad Mahmudul Hoque Mojumdar confirmed that officers recovered two motorcycles, three rounds of live bullets, and a magazine from the scene, though the number of assailants remains unclear.

Around 7:00pm, Azam was taken to the 250‑bed Kushtia General Hospital. Dr Hossain Imam, residential medical officer of the hospital, told The Daily Star that the victim was in critical condition.

He said the patient was referred to Rajshahi and Dhaka Medical College Hospital, with relatives reportedly arranging the transfer.

Officer‑in‑Charge Mohammad Shahidul Islam of Mirpur Police Station said no eyewitnesses have been found so far. “We are talking to people related to the warehouse. We will be able to provide details after investigation,” he noted.
