Parliament must be centre of political activities: Deputy speaker
Barrister Kayser Kamal, deputy speaker of parliament, said on Saturday that democracy will be firmly established in Bangladesh if the parliament is transformed into the centre of political activities.
Speaking as chief guest at an Iftar party organised by the Netrokona Journalist Forum-Dhaka at a hotel in the capital, he emphasised that the rule of law cannot be ensured without a democratic system, and national development is impossible without the rule of law.
"Human rights will be well-established once the rule of law is in place. Societies and states that have implemented the rule of law, democratic norms, human rights, and constitutional frameworks have truly progressed," he said.
The deputy speaker noted that Bangladesh had to endure a long period of fascism.
He described the February 12 election as the beginning of a new journey for parliamentary democracy, a path first initiated under the leadership of Khaleda Zia. History shows that BNP represents the journey of democracy, and efforts must be made to ensure that this progress is never hindered in the future.
The event was presided over by Rafique Muhammad, president of the organising body, and moderated by its general secretary, Shawkat Ali Khan Litho. Distinguished personalities from various fields in Netrokona were also present.
