Sherpur police recovered the body of an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) from a rented house in the town late Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as Shahinul Islam, 43.

The body was recovered around 11:00pm when relatives broke open the locked bedroom door and found his body hanging from the ceiling fan.

Shahinul left behind his wife and a son. He had joined Sherpur Sadar Police Station about seven months ago and was living in a rented house with his wife and child.

According to police sources, Shahinul’s wife Maksuda Parvin left for her village home with their child around 11:00am on Thursday.

Shahinul went home from duty at around 2:00pm. Later, in the evening, when his wife’s relatives tried to reach him on the phone, there was no response. They returned to the house at night and, after repeated calls went unanswered, forced open the door to discover the body.

Maksuda claimed her husband had been suffering from mental health issues and was under regular treatment, taking prescribed medication.

Sherpur’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan said Shahinul was taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

“Further legal steps will be taken based on the family’s opinion,” he added.

He also noted that whether Shahinul had mental health problems could only be confirmed after an investigation.
