'Mysterious' death of jail inmate

An inmate of the Habiganj District Jail has allegedly been tortured to death. Deputy jailor Md Asad, however, said Lilu Miah fell sick Saturday evening. He was rushed to the district modern hospital where the doctors declared him dead. It was a case of sudden death, he claimed. Contacted, the resident medical officer, Devapada Roy yesterday said Lilu had died well before he was taken to the hospital. Besides, the body bore marks of injury, he admitted. After the post-mortem, an inquest report was prepared yesterday afternoon in presence of executive magistrate MA Mahmudur Rahman at the district hospital. Victim's brother Bachchu Miah alleged that the body bore marks of injuries. "My brother was tortured to death. We shall file a case", he told newsmen yesterday while receiving the body at the hospital. Sub-Inspector Manoj Kanti Roy of Bahubal police station quizzed Lilu Miah for hours at the jail gate till Saturday evening in connection with a robbery case, the deputy jailor said. A court earlier granted quizzing at the jail gate as police had prayed for his remand. Lilu Miah, 48, hailing from village Nishapot of Habiganj Sadar upazila was in the jail hajat for the last three weeks in connection with a robbery incident.
