Robbers yesterday killed a villager in Jhalakati and injured eight policemen in Moulvibazar while burglars stole Tk 2 lakh from two newspaper offices in Chittagong. Robbers in Jhalakati shot dead Jalal Hawlader, 40, and looted valuables from a house at Kacharibari village in Nalchhiti upazila, according to a UNB report. Locals said a gang of around 10 stormed into the house late at night and looted Tk 10,000 in cash, gold ornaments, one television set and two mobile phones worth Tk 1 lakh, by taking the house inmates hostage at gunpoint. When the neighbours besieged the house they opened fire on them leaving Jalal dead on the spot. The villagers later caught one of the robbers. Our Correspondent from Moulvibazar reports: Eight policemen including an officer in-charge (OC) of a police station were injured as robbers attacked them in Baralekha. Police, however, arrested two robbers from the spot. Amal Krishna Dhar OC of Baralekha police station said a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery at 'Kasriguler Math' godown. When police challenged the robbers, they attacked them with sharp weapons. Police arrested two robbers and recovered a pipe gun, two bullets, a billhook and four daggers from their possession. Our Staff Correspondent in Chittagong reports: Around two lakh taka was stolen by burglars from the Chittagong bureau offices of two leading Bengali dailies - the Janakantha and the Amar Desh, in the city early yesterday. Sources said, the burglars entered the newspaper offices on the first floor of Mannan Bhaban at Jubilee Road sometimes between 12:00am and 5:00am by breaking open the grills of three windows. The burglars took away Tk 1.60 lakh from the Janakantha office and Tk 30,000 from the Amar Desh office.
