2 militant suspects held, 7 JMB men remanded

Police on Friday arrested two suspected Islamist militants in Bagerhat and remanded seven Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) men for five more days in Rajshahi. Our Staff Correspondent from Khulna reports: Police on Friday evening arrested two people from Deparha bazar under Bagerhat Sadar upazila while distributing provocative leaflets. Arrestees Mujahidul Islam,30, and his younger brother Saidul Islam,19, are sons of late Abdur Rashid Mallick of Charakchuria village under Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat district. Officer in-charge (OC) Md Saiduzzaman of Bagerhat Sadar police station said both were arrested with provocative leaflets and brochures at Deparha bazar. The brochures contained stories against a movement launched by Awami League in January, 2007 while the leaflets bore instructions on how to carry out militant activities, the OC said. Police said both the arrestees were staying at a mosque at Deparha bazar. In Rajshahi, the arrested seven leaders of outlawed JMB were remanded for five more days. Magistrate Tariqul Islam of Rajshahi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court granted the remand when the militants were produced before the court praying for eight days fresh remand for further investigation, reports UNB. Earlier, they were remanded for seven days. On October 9, police arrested them from different places in Rajshahi, Naogaon and Natore districts during a special drive. Later, they were produced before Rajshahi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court seeking a 10-day remand. The court granted seven days' remand. The arrestees are Rajshahi divisional JMB chief Ashraf alias Haider alias Abdur Razzaq, 32, Asadul Islam, 30, Isharul, 22, JMB Naogaon chief Hafez Abdur Rahim alias Ismail, 30, Momtaj, 20, JMB Natore chief Shahabuddin, 35, and Shahidul, 35.
