2 drug peddlers jailed, 11 held in 3 districts

Two drug peddlers were jailed in Faridpur and Barisal yesterday while 11 were held in Kushtia and Shariatpur districts the day before. One person was sentenced to life imprisonment in a narcotic case in Faridpur yesterday. Convict Jasim Uddin ,27, is son of Altaf Hossain of Chandpara (Karikor para) under Chaugacha upazila of Jessore district, says our correspondent. He was also fined Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer more six months rigorous imprisonment. Jasim was held by law enforcers with 26 bottles of phensidyl from a bus on DhakaKhulna highway on Februry 22, 2009. Our Correspondent from Barisal reports: A Barisal court yesterday sentenced a pharmacy owner to life term imprisonment for illegally selling sedatives. Mintu Majumdar,32, owner of Ali Oushadh Biponi of Port Road area was also fined Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer six months more in jail. A special team of Rab-8 raided the medicine shop of Mintu on September 1, 2008 afternoon and recovered a huge quantity of sedatives like morphine and phenarex. Rab arrested Mintu for illegally stocking and selling the drugs. Our Correspondent from Kushtia reports: Police arrested nine drug peddlers including a woman in Daulatpur upazila on Tuesday. Police said, separate teams of Daulatpur police station raided different areas and arrested Sahin, Lalu Mondol and Badsha of Daulatkhali, Affan, Zia, Ariful of Sonaikundi, Diraj and Robban of Farkpur and Hazera Khatun of Mathurapur. Police also recovered three kilogram of hemp and 40 bottles of phensidyl. Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested two drug peddlers along with 2 kilogram of hemp at Khirpara village in Naria upazila of Shariatpur district. The arrestees are identified as Billal Melkar, 28, of Bhajeswar village and Billal Mallik, 25, of Khirpara village. Later, they were handed over to Naria police and a case was filed. Our Chapainawabganj Correspondent adds: Members of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) seized an Indian truck with 2,325 bottles of phensidyl at Sonamasjid land port under Shibganj upazila on Tuesday night. Sources said the truck entered the land port at around 9:30 pm, but the patrol team of Sonamasjid camp marked that the truck carried Bangladeshi number plate (Dhaka Metro-Ta-14-9287). At this, they challenged the truck but the driver and helper managed to flee. After searching the truck they recovered 2,325 bottles of phensidyl and an Indian number plate of a truck (UP- AT-782959).
