Three BM College students jailed for abduction
A Barisal court on Monday sentenced three students of Government BM Collage to two years rigorous imprisonment (RI) in an abduction case.
The convicts are Swapan Kumar Debnath, 22, Sajib Kazi, 23 and Biplob Sarder, 25. They were tried in absentia.
First Additional District and Sessions Judge Siddikul Arefin Chowdhury pronounced the judgment and fined the convicts Tk 1,000 each, in default, they are to suffer another month in jail.
According to prosecution, the students abducted their classmate Ajit Roy from Kalbil village under Ujirpur upazila of Barisal for a ransom of Tk 50 thousand on April 21, 2006 while he was going to collage. They took Ajit to different places in Barisal city and tortured him.
Police raided different areas in the city and rescued Ajit from Nupur Hotel in front of Kotwoali Police Station the same day. Ajit filed a case with Kotwali Police Station against Swapan and three of his accomplices the following day.
After investigation, Sub-Inspector (SI) Swapan Kumar Das pressed charges against Swapan Kumar Debnath, Sajib Kazi, Biplob Sarder and Nayeemul Islam Nayon on August 31, 2008.
After examining the witnesses, the court acquitted Nayon of the abduction charge.
