Why election?

Shaheen Subhan, Atlanta, USA
I must congratulate the CTG and the army chief for their collective perseverance and commitment to salvage the lost dignity of our beloved nation. Since independence, and especially following the brutal August coup in 1975, a small elite, to the detriment of our impoverished majority, has repeatedly looted the country. This political class and their cohorts must never be allowed another opportunity to “build the nation”. So, fixing a date for election was wrong for two reasons: 1.The depth of corruption is so entrenched that it may well take beyond 2008 to repair the damage brought about by "elected" leaders. Do we really need another election to undo all that has been achieved so far? Elections in the past have done little to change the lives of ordinary people. So why go there? The political class has staged elections to maintain a facade of democracy--a condition that perhaps appeased their foreign masters but failed to bring about change in any meaningful way. If anything, the political class in collusion with a few bad apples in the army, civil service and the business community have succeeded in emptying the national treasury. 2.As you will agree, I'm certain, when a wooden crate is infested with termite the solution isn't just repairing the infected area but to replace the entire crate. I sincerely hope that the present government will take this message to heart and do the right thing. Cleansing the mess will take some time and as a citizen of a wounded nation I fail to see any urgency to have another election in 2008. As conscientious citizens, it's our duty and responsibility to extend all possible help to this government. Their mission is a bold and noble one and it's only fair that we provide this opportunity to this government, which lacks legitimacy in the perception of vested interests. Surely, the elected leaders of the past have little to show for their services to the nation. Indeed, the legacy of these crooks is of utter contempt for their constituents and the bankruptcy of the state through theft, murder, and mayhem.
