Students of Barisal Veterinary Institute under Patuakhali University of Science and Technology (PSTU) staged a sit-in on the campus yesterday locking the gate of the institute. They were demanding withdrawal of expulsion of six students. The six were expelled by the university authorities in September on charge of spreading agitation on the campus. The expelled students are Palash Kumar, ABM Mustafa Kamal, Kamrul Hassan, Md Saifuddin, Abu Bakar Siddique and Fakrul Islam Sarkar. PSTU registrar Dr Nirmal Chandra Das told this correspondent that action against the students and some teachers were taken as per decision of the academic council meeting on September 27. The meeting took the steps after reviewing the report of the probe committee headed by Prof Nizamuddin Ahmed, he said. The academic council expelled six students for one semester and served show cause notices on 10 students. Associate professor Abdul Matin of Dairy and Poultry Science Department and associate professor Anisur Rahman of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery Department were made OSD for 'instigating' chaos on campus. The PSTU registrar further said that the students were expelled after a lengthy investigation. 'Most of the six students have various criminal records,' he added. Meanwhile, the expelled students claimed that they are innocent and alleged to have been victimised by the PSTU authorities as they always protested irregularities and illegal activities. Barisal Veterinary Institute reopened on November 5, around two months after the institute was closed sine die due to student agitation. The students were demanding restoration of their internship for one year and scrapping changes in the curriculum by the authorities.
