Cheats attempt to take away Tk 60,000 from another bank in Jhalakathi
Burglars looted around Tk 1 crore from a bank branch at Daudkandi in Comilla district while cheats attempted to take away Tk 60,000 from another bank in Jhalakathi district on Sunday.
Burglars decamped with Tk 1 crore from Daudkandi branch of Agrani Bank on Sunday night, according to UNB.
Police said, the burglars entered the bank by cutting its collapsible gate at dead of night and looted the amount by breaking open a locker.
Bank officials said, there was no guard in the bank on duty on that night.
In Jhalakati, police arrested two cheats on Sunday along with Tk 60,000 fraudulently taken away from the National Bank branch in the district town.
The arrestees were identified as M Mashiur Rahman Hawladar, 26, of Ishwarkati village and M Osman Mallik, 19, of Uttambad village of Nalchhiti upazila.
Police said, expatriate Abdur Rahman of Raipasha village in Sadar upazila used to send money to his wife Jahanara Begum through the National Bank.
Mashiur went to Jahanara's house on Saturday night and convinced her to have an insurance policy to protect herself and her son from possible mshaps.
Jahanara came to the bank along with Mashiur and his gang at about 10:00am and gave them a cheque for Tk 60,000.
Meanwhile, a member of the gang left the bank after drawing the amount but Mashiur told Jahanara that he did not know the man.
Sensing something wrong, bank officials detained Mashiur and interrogated him. Afterwards, they compelled Mashiur to make a call over cell phone, his accomplice Osman appeared at the scene with the money.
The bank authorities handed them over to police.
