Rival BNP Factions Hold Councils Today

Sylhet tense, Magura situation eases

A tense situation is prevailing in Sylhet city as two factions of the district unit are going to hold councils at closely located venues under Dakshin Surma upazila today. District Convener Ilyas Ali-led faction will hold conference at Shuvechchha Community Centre in the area while Joint Convener Abul Kaher Shamim group will hold the first session of the council at a truck terminal in the area and the second session at a venue near the community centre, according to our staff correspondent. Meanwhile, Two factions of Magura BNP are finally ready to hold district unit conference at separate venues in the town today. In Sylhet, Ilyas faction announced that central BNP Joint Secretary General Goyeshwar Roy would inaugurate the first of the council while Kaher Shamim-led faction said central BNP Joint Secretary General Nazrul Islam Khan would join their council as the chief guest. Kaher Shamim group held a preparatory meeting in Chandipul area in the city on Monday night with Haji Shahab Uddin in the chair. Both factions have already formed their committees at Kanaighat, Golapganj, Beanibazar, Companiganj, Fenchuganj and Gowainghat upazila units. Magura BNP Convener Kabir Murad-led faction will hold its conference in Parnanduali area while Joint Convener Mokaddes Hossain group will hold the council at district unit office, reports our correspondent. The district administration on Sunday gave permission to Kabir Murad faction to hold the council at Asaduzzaman auditorium in the town. But it cancelled the permission on Monday following an application submitted by advocate Mokaddes Hossain to the deputy commissioner, seeking permission to hold the council of his faction at the same venue on the same day. Apprehending untoward incident, the administration also rejected the petition of advocate Mokaddes the same day. Talking to this correspondent, Kabir Murad said Mokaddes group is trying to hold conference separately violating party constitution. “Their evil intention to damage the image of the party will not be fulfilled as eight of the ten joint conveners of the district unit have extended support to me”, Murad claimed. Our Kushtia correspondent adds: Rival factions of Kushtia BNP held separate councils and declared separate committees of the town unit on Monday night. District BNP Convener Sohrab Uddin-led faction held council of the unit at Kushtia Zila Parishad hall room and Joint Convener Minhajur Rahman Alo organised the council of the same unit at Kushtia Law College. Sohrab group made Hafizur Rahman Helal and Kutub Uddin Ahmed president and secretary of the town unit while Alo group formed the committee of the unit with AK Shamim Arzoo and Mohuddin Choudhury Milon as president and secretary.
