Five to die for killing N'ganj businessman

A Narayanganj court yesterday sentenced five people to death and 23 others to life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) for murdering power loom businessman Abdul Latif at Mordasadi village in Araihazar upazila. Judge of Narayanganj additional district and sessions 's court-1 Md Jalal Uddin delivered the verdict yesterday noon. The court also fined each convict Tk 20,000, in default, to suffer another year's RI. The five convicts sentenced to death by hanging are: Shafu alias Sohel, Barek, Afsaruddin, Shawkat Ali and Omar Ali. The lifers are Manzurul Haq, Shahid, Kamal, Akter Hossain, Faizuddin, Nurul Islam, Billal, Hasan Ali, Liakat Ali, Yunus Ali, Kawal Kalai, Afazuddin, Helaluddin, Akter, Alauddin, Rezzzak, Akhter, Kafiluddin, Shamsul Haque, Hekmat, Belal, Falan and Alam. All the five sentenced to death were present at the court during the delivery of the verdict. According to the prosecution story, a gang of criminals posing as police entered the house of Abdul Latif on September 10, 1998. They kidnapped Abdul Latif at gunpoint. The next morning, his body was found in a pond in front of Araihazar Joandia Primary School. The criminals also injured Latif's two brothers by sharp weapons. Latif's brother Abdul Mannan later filed a murder case with Araihazar police station accusing 28 people.
