Three jailed in separate incident
A robber was killed in mob beating in Sunamganj yesterday while three others were jailed in Jhalakathi on Tuesday.
The incident of death of a robber in mob beating occurred at Kalipur village in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district early yesterday.
The alleged robber was identified as Tamsir Ali, 38, son of Eskandar Ali of
Jigali village in the upazila, reports UNB.
Sources said, a gang numbering 15-16 swooped on Saudi expatriate Geda Miah's house breaking open the door and looted Tk 1.72 lakh in cash, 20 tolas of gold ornaments worth Tk 8 lakh, taking the inmates hostage at gunpoint.
During the robbery, the house inmates sought help of their neighbours over mobile phone. Within minutes, locals cordoned off the house and caught Tamsir, one of the fleeing robbers.
Villagers then beat up the robber mercilessly, leaving him critically injured. On information, police rushed to the spot and sent him to a local clinic where the attending doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered a pipe-gun, two bullets and six sharp weapons from the spot.
Tamsir was wanted in a number of robbery and other criminal cases, police said.
Meanwhile, a Jhalakathi court on Tuesday convicted three people and sentenced each of them to five years imprisonment in a robbery case.
The convicts are: Abu Talukder and Zakir Hawlader of Noykathi village
and Abdul Malek of Char Shuktagar village in Rajapur upazila.
Of them, Abu and Malek were in the dock during the judgement while Zakir Hawlader remained absconding.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 5,000 each, in default, to suffer three more months in jail.
According to the prosecution story, the robbers entered the house of Rafiq Mollah at about 3:00am and looted valuables worth Tk 36,950 on November 17, 2007.
The gang also stabbed Rafiq and his daughter Akhi as they tried to resist them, leaving them critically injured.
Later, victim Rafiq filed a case with the police.
