Martyrdom of 5 FFs recalled

A memorial meeting on martyrdom anniversary of freedom fighters was held at Muktinagar High School under Shaghata upazila in the district on Friday. Freedom fighters here recalled that, on December 4 in 1971 a group of freedom fighters led by Rostam Ali Khandaker launched repeated grenade attack on the Fulchhari police station. At this the Pak occupation forces fled the station and took shelter in Gobindi embankment area under Shaghata police station. Chasing the Pak forces, the Rostam Bahini cordoned the area and took position. At one stage, a massive fighting took place between the freedom fighters and the Pak forces. In the battle, 22 Pak soldiers were killed and 5 freedom fighters Zahedul Haque Badal, Afzal Hossain, Kabez Ali, Osman Gani and Abdus Sobhan embraced martyrdom. After some days, the Pak forces left the area and thus Fulchhari and Shaghata were freed from the clutches of the occupation army. In order to pay homage to the martyred sons of the soil the fourth December celebration committee formed by a group of freedom fighters, arranged the meeting in cooperation with local social organisations. Local lawmaker and chairman of a parliamentary standing committee Advocate Fazley Rabbi Miah attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest and Deputy Commissioner M Shahidul Islam was present as the special guest. The lawmaker in his speech said that the independence was achieved after a nine-month long armed struggle and supreme sacrifices by the freedom fighters and the people. He urged all to protect the hard-earned independence at any cost and join development efforts with the spirit of the liberation. Presided by freedom fighter M Jasim Uddin Mondal, the meeting was also addressed by freedom fighters Goutam Chandra Modak, Enamul Haque and Mostafizur Rahman. A large number of people including freedom fighters, political leaders, local elite and the journalists were present on the occasion.
