Bochaganj upazila, Jhenidah dist recall the day of freedom

The day of freedom was observed in Jhenidah district and Bochaganj upazila under Dinajpur yesterday. On this day in 1971, valiant freedom fighters freed the district and the upazila from Pakistani occupation forces. Marking the historic day, a memorial for the martyred freedom fighters built by Bochaganj upazila administration on the premises of Shetabganj Pilot High School was inaugurated by Lawmaker Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury from Dinajpur-2 constituency in the morning, according to our correspondent. Freedom fighters from different areas of the upazila gathered there and paid homage to the Liberation War martyrs by placing wreaths at the memorial. Local administration, freedom fighters and socio-political and cultural organisations held rallies, discussions and cultural programme, marking the day. Our Jhenidah correspondent reported that the day's programme started with hoisting of the national flag in the morning. A colourful procession was brought out from the old DC court premises at around 11:00am. People from all walks of life joined the procession. After the declaration of independence on March, 26 several battles took place in different areas of the district and the occupation army aided by their local collaborators started massacre. In the last week of November in 1971,freedom fighters entered different areas of Jhenidah and defeated Pakistani troops in a few battles. Finally they declared the sub division (now district) free on December 6.
