Ringleader of robbers, 4 muggers held in Sylhet

Police arrested a ringleader of robbers in Balaganj upazila on Tuesday and rounded up four muggers from Goainghat upazila the day before. Robber Cornel Miah, 30, son of Tahir Ullah of Monohorpur village was arrested from his house. Acting on secret information, police raided his house early in the morning. Cornel was accused in a number of robbery and other criminal cases. Another report adds: Police held four muggers while they were trying to hijack a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Baher Sarak in Goainghat upazila on Sylhet-Tamabil highway on Monday night. The arrestees are Mirza Atik, 20, Mahin, 25, residents of the city, Al-Amin, 26, of Sunamganj district and Mukta, 26, of Dakkhin Surma upazila. A case was filed against them under Speedy Trial Act. Later, the arrested muggers were produced before the court on Tuesday and the court sent them to jail hajat rejecting their bail prayers. Locals said the five muggers hired the auto-rickshaw from Tuker bazaar, on the outskirts of the city, for going to Jaflong. While returning from Jaflong they tried to snatch the auto-rickshaw taking its driver hostage at gunpoint. Hearing the driver's cry for help, locals rushed to the spot and caught two of the muggers while three others managed to flee the scene. Police later held two other muggers with the help of local people while another mugger, Lahin Ahmed, 25, who sustained serious injuries during the hot chase, died in the city's Northeast Clinic. Police sent the body of Lahin to Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. A Cox's Bazar report adds: Police arrested the ringleader of a gang of robbers in Chandgaon thana of Chittagong on Sunday. The arrestee was identified as Mostaque, ringleader of notorious 'Mostaque Bahini' and son of Mohammad Sayeed of Madarbonia village in Ukhia thana of the district. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police raided a hideout at Chandgaon in Chittagong and caught Mostaque. One homemade gun and two bullets were recovered following his confessional statement. Armed members of Mostaque Bahini have been committing robberies in Hoakong-Baharchhara road and nearby areas since long, local people said.
