RU students surround cop on campus
Students of Rajshahi University (RU) on Thursday confined a police officer in campus on charge of manipulating the investigation of a vehicle torching case filed in 2007.
Sources said, the students including the accused surrounded the police officer near the Senate Bhaban for two hours. Now a law instructor at Bangladesh Police Academy, he was the investigation officer and sub-inspector of Motihar police station during the campus unrest in 2007.
Later, they took him to the university proctor office. After a meeting there between proctors and cops, the police officer was handed over to the assistant commissioner of Motihar police, Mrinal Kanti Roy.
A number of accused alleged that the official extorted money from their families on various pretexts.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Mrinal Kanti said they later freed the police officer as there was no case against him.
During the campus unrest in 2007, DGFI assistant director Shawkat Ali lodged a case on August 23 accusing two teachers and four students of torching his vehicle and assaulting him on August 22.
Later on September 1, the aforesaid investigation officer pressed charges against 14 people.
