The central leaders of Bangladesh Union Parishad Forum (BUPF) at a meeting here yesterday demanded amendment to a provision in Union Parishad Law 2009, which they said was against the spirit of empowering the local government body. The law contains the provision for suspending a union parishad chairman by the district administration if he or she (chairman) is sued by someone and the case is accepted by the court. They said the UP chairmen are elected people's representatives and the provision in the law is insulting to the people's mandate, the BUPF leaders said. They demanded that the government amend the provision immediately for strengthening union parishads. Otherwise, they threatened to challenge the provision in the court. Farhad Hossain, deputy commissioner (DC) of Nilphamari, was the chief guest while Nilphamari Pourasava Chairman Dewan Kamal Ahmed, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Khorshed Alam and Sadar Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Doulat Jahan Chhobi were the special guests at the meeting with BUPF Nilphamari unit President Obaidur Rahman in the chair. Mahbubur Rahman Tulu and Ataharul Islam Bulbul, president and general secretary of BUPF central committee, in their speeches urged the government to let the UP chairmen and members perform their duties without interference of the local lawmakers and the UNOs. The BUPF leaders also requested the government to enhance honorarium for the chairmen and members. Chief guest Farhad Hossain in his speech stressed the need for strengthening the union parishsds for the overall development of the rural areas.
