Seminar on advances in epilepsy treatment

Star Health Report
The Society of Neurologists of Bangladesh and Sanofi Aventis, Bangladesh have jointly organised a seminar on "Recent Advances in the treatment of epilepsy" at a local hotel in the city recently. Professor Louis Pierre Genton, a renowned neurologist of University Hospital Nord in France presented the keynote paper and focused the exclusive role of sodium valproate drug in treating epilepsy effectively. According to Mr Genten — tremendous advances have been made in epilepsy treatment over the past decade. Epilepsy may be treated with many drugs called antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Among them, Sodium valproate remains the cornerstone of treatment. It has broad spectrum activities and is most effective in the treatment of generalised epilepsy and some types of focal epilepsy. He also suggested that before prescribing any drug, it is important to diagnose the type of epilepsy accurately. Epilepsy or recurrent seizure is caused by sudden bursts of electrical activity in the brain, which stops the brain communicating normally with the body. The neurological disorder affects 1.5-2 million people of our country. Many people believe potentially harmful myths about epilepsy and seek treatment from quacks or indigenous management. Epileptic patients can lead a normal life if they get proper treatment with appropriate medication and care — eminent neurologists pointed out in the seminar. Iftekharul Islam, Managing Director of Sanofi Aventis, Bangladesh inaugurated the scientific session while president of Society of Neurologists of Bangladesh, Professor Anisul Hoque chaired the programme. National professor M R khan, Professor Quazi Deen Mohammad, Professor A K M Anwar Ullah, Seikh Nahar Mahmud and neurologists working at different level in the country were present in the seminar.
