Hooliganism

S.A. Mansoor, Dhaka
Every 31 December night becomes a night of vandalism and lawlessness. It is an unfortunate matter. Hardly any Christian celebrates it in this rowdy and shameful manner. Why do we ? It is not even our religious festival! This is a matter of national shame for the country. It has to be stopped. For the Muslims, the Hijri new year begins from the first day of Muharram; a month of sorrow, prayer and repentance. The Bengali year beginning on the 1st. of Baishakh is a day of cultural festivity, a joyous day unlike the Christian New Year which we start with vandalism! It is beyond any sense of logic or understanding! The government should crack down on these misdeeds with a strong hand. All violators of law and order should be handed down the harshest punishment on the spot.
