For God's sake... why?
This refers to your captioned commentary, published in the 18th February issue of The Daily Star. This write-up inspires me to write something more about the 'name-game' of the government.
Surely, we didn't vote the ruling Awami League to power to change the name of public establishments like Bhasani Navo Theatre, Zia International Airport, etc. etc. However, the immediate past elected government did the same as the present government is doing now. But the question is: did they get public appreciation? The answer is negative. Then why has the government become wild with joy with this dirty game of changing the names of public institutions to manifest its meanness?
Doesn't the renaming of Zia International Airport after the name of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) undermine the personality of this great saint? Why shall we use this holy name in a controversial matter to exploit and manipulate religious sentiments of the God fearing people of the land? This practice is obviously tantamount to trading in religion as that of the BNP led four party alliance government.
We have profound respect for Shaheed Suhrawardy, Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, Bangabandhu Sheikh Majibur Rahman, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Ziaur Rahman, Colonel Osmani & other national leaders & heroes. History has already determined their position and status. So any attempt at refixing their place in Bangladesh perspective is meaningless. We can't reduce or increase their contribution or image which history has granted them.
