JS supports UN nuclear non-proliferation treaty
The House yesterday took a resolution supporting the UN's nuclear non-proliferation treaty, and extended full support of government to advance the world body's nuclear disarmament plan and the proposal for negotiation to conclude nuclear weapons convention.
The resolution, read out by Speaker Abdul Hamid, says Bangladesh parliament encourages and calls upon parliaments around the world to join the Bangladesh's parliament in supporting a convention to build a nuclear weapon free world.
It also says Bangladesh parliament urges the conference to be held at the UN headquarters in New York from May 3 to 28 this year to begin negotiation on nuclear disarmament.
The resolution emphasised the needs for addressing all issues related to all the three pillars of the nuclear non proliferation treaty, mainly nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and the peaceful usage of nuclear energy in the review conference titled 'Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) 2010'.
In its resolution, the House also said $100 billion spent annually on nuclear weapons should be channelled instead towards attaining the UN Millennium Development Goals as well as the urgent climate change adaptation funding needs of most vulnerable countries.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union on April 10, 2009 unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the 'advancing Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, and securing the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty'.
The parliament also decided to send copies of the resolution to all parliaments, to the secretary general of UN, to the president of the UN general assembly and the chair of the 2010 NPT review conference.
