Activities of BCL
This refers to the news 'Stop BCL's Criminal Activities' by your Rajshahi correspondent published on 27 April. Fifteen teachers of Rajshahi University expressed deep concern over the “criminal activities” of Bangladesh Chhatra League at educational institutions and urged the government to take immediate steps in this regard. They felt that this anarchic situation is infiltrating into the state activities like cancer.
The appropriate call of five noted educationists who had urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to cut all relations with the BCL and her wise and timely acquiescence was much appreciated by the nation. She has rightly pointed out that all achievements of the AL could go in vein due to this terminal disease, which BCL has turned out to be. She has assured the nation of stern action against their criminal activities.
One of the best measures to get rid of a malignant disease is amputation, unless you want it to kill itself gradually along with you. Any measure short of eradication would be a half measure as it will comeback with a much greater force. When the country is in the process of banning a certain religion based political party, the BCL should also be banned on all campuses. This will be the first step to banning party politics on the campus.
There is nothing wrong with student politics that trains the future leaders of a nation the tricks of the trade. However, everything can go wrong if that training is for the wrong cause doing more harm than good to the nation. A politically conscious student is learned enough to understand national politics and need not be a party activist in any form. Our student community, regardless of political affiliations, have always worked together to protect the interest of the country when the need arose. No one is contesting their contributions.
What they did in the past is laudable but what they are currently doing is lamentable and needs to be stopped.
