Md. Al-Helal, Faculty of Fisheries, HSTU, Dinajpur
14th February 2009. It was 12'O clock. It is fourth floor of Shahid Mahfuzur Rahman Hall. Five students together, one in front of a microphone and one in front of a PC. They are trying to broadcast a live programme through radio, which is not traditional, but from online. HSTU, it is the University of Northern Bangladesh, situated at Dinajpur district under Rajshahi division. At that time, “Online Radio” was a new concept for young generations of Bangladesh. People were not that familiar with it. At that time two students of HSTU were trying to set up an online radio. It was only functional for listening songs. There were no live programmes. A few more students joined this group and tried to make it better. They gave a name to this radio and it was “Radio Something”. May 9, 2009 was a memorable day for HSTU. For the first time “IT festival'09” was held on the campus. The HSTU was in a festive mood. Radio Something took a stall in the festival and they broadcast the festival live, including seminars, workshops, gaming and programming contest results. They have faced a lot of trouble in broadcasting their programmes. They failed to solve their problems & thought that it would not be possible for them to continue their radio service. However, they never stopped their work completely. They tried to contact some companies so that they could get some kelp. At last, they came into a partnership with Soft Tech Innovation Ltd. They built up a new format, changed the name and reappeared as “Radio Bijoy”. “Radio Bijoy” is now one of the most popular online radio stations.
