Things going wrong

Kh. Asef Safa Kabir, Muhammadpur, Dhaka
As a sensible citizen of this country I'm absolutely cynical about our overall socio-political scenario. I really don't know what I must be proud of when everyday countless dismal reports of atrocious violence torment our conscience. The irresistible crime rate of the country is breaking all records as every day the sinister monster of carnage reigns over the innocents. Murderers, muggers, and extortionists dauntlessly rule over the common people. We are perpetually living an insecure life. We have failed to ensure a safe society for our women as malicious gangs of rascals, rapists and acid-throwers wait for their helpless prey in every street. We are ever frightened by the outburst of political and religious extremism. In the euphemistic name of “student politics” our students carry automatic weapons and frequently engage in anti-social activities. Our public administration is corrupt and our biased judicial system is perpetually characterized by inefficiency and bureaucracy. Most of the businesses in the country do not operate ethically as the vicious urge of making extra profits recurrently make the traders forsake their sense of social responsibilities. As a result, our markets are mostly dominated by adulterated foods, toxic medicines and low-quality goods. The transport sector is also in utter chaos. Launches capsize regularly due to the greed of the owners. Taxis and CNGs charge extra fares; buses and trucks are generally driven by untrained maniacs who frequently cause tragic road-accidents. To make matters even worse, the traffic-cops are corrupt themselves. Our law-enforcers are often labelled as the most notorious culprits and instead of improving the law and order scenario they are actually good at victimizing the innocent people. Our elected representatives don't even pay heed to the grievances of the people. Most of the ministers and key politicians are only good at bootlicking. Our social life is ever characterized by nasty rivalries and destructive political trends. No one understands that our deaf and insensitive political leaders are virtually pushing us towards the brink of extinction. As the population of this country grows manifold in the next 30 years, these social predicaments might make our poor nation disappear into the bottomless trashcan of history unless we stand defiantly against our own weaknesses that made us choose the wrong leaders. We don't have the luxury to brawl over the past anymore. It's time to wake up collectively to ensure a brighter future for ourselves.
