The Bangladesh Chhatra League has again come up with its ugly face. This time it was in Jahangirnagar University. It appears they went on their 'cruelty show' to facilitate land grabbing by their paymasters. A few weeks back their fellow compatriots of Barisal Polytechnique even played a more harrowing drama perhaps for similar pecuniary gains. The government has shown profound anger and annoyance, but to no avail. Can we suggest the ruling party to disband the Chhatra League for the next two years ? Even forever? I would like to remind here that in Awami League's 7 years struggle against BNP-Jamaat and the army backed caretaker government, the BCL had little contribution. Even in the last election BCL workers were hardly active. The Awami League has got such a vast number of workers in the field level that they have no need for such unruly student activists. What they need to do is to organise genuine workers in ward, union and thana level. Time is running out, so is the patience of people.

I was a student of Jahangirnagar University. It was a great university where students could achieve their academic goals. The environment of the university was so friendly. There was a unique relation between seniors and juniors in JU. Now when I read about JU I feel salty water on my cheek. What is happening in JU? I believe, any factional feud is related to a syndicate involving teachers. Student politics is fully controlled by teachers. Students have always played a vital role in any situation of this country. But now who will believe this? I think Chhatra League, Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir should be banned by the govt. But student politics should not be banned. I mean, every university will have a student committee and that committee will be elected by all students of that university like DHAKSU, JAKSU etc. Students should fight for their rights. They should not wash their hands with their brothers' blood ! M. A. Faruki, Ex-student of Jahangirnagar University Tollabag, Dhaka

I was horrified to learn of the atrocities committed by the so-called Bangladesh Chhatra League in the name of capturing the halls at the Jahangirnagar University. This was not the only time "they" did it. They even assaulted the Vice Chancellor! Why? Anyone who goes to any educational institution, goes there to learn and not to start fighting. These people seem to take delight in learning how to beat up, how to wield hockey sticks and knives, how to shoot with firearms. They can never be students. I hereby request and urge the government to investigate the matter as early as possible and punish the criminals. Ranjan Chowdhury, Distillery Road, Dhaka
