Minor illness, specialist doctors

Shahabuddin Mahtab, On e-mail
A couple of weeks back, on a discussion of health matters, in the TV, our Health Minister and Dr. Prangopal Dutta (BSMMU) were taking part. A questioner asked Dr Dutt, the reason why the top doctors give so little time to their patients. Is it really possible to diagnose a patient in a couple of minutes? Dr. Dutt gave a straightforward answer. Was it possible for a doctor to give adequate time to a patient, when fifty patients were there, in his waiting room? The reason for this is not far to seek. The well to do patients (and at odd times poor patients) all flock to the top specialists for minor ailments. The possible remedy requires the co-operation of both the specialists and the family doctors (primary doctor). The specialists can only attend the referred cases. But the above needs the changing of our attitude, and our social behaviour, and furthermore some sacrifice on the part of our most successful physicians and surgeons (“there is enough for everybody's need, but not for everyone's good” says Mahatma Gandhi).
